Frequently Asked Questions

• What exactly is Cortec VpCI-649 BD and why is it considered a revolutionary solution?

Cortec VpCI-649 BD is a highly concentrated, biodegradable liquid formulation specifically designed to provide exceptional long-term corrosion protection for both ferrous and non-ferrous metals in various challenging environments. It's revolutionary because it replaces older, more hazardous corrosion inhibitors that contained nitrites, phosphates, chromates, and heavy metals, offering a much safer and more environmentally friendly alternative without compromising on performance.

• How does Cortec VpCI-649 BD deliver such comprehensive corrosion protection?

This unique product combines both contact and vapor-phase corrosion inhibitors (VpCI® technology). The contact inhibitors protect the metal surfaces directly in contact with the treated fluid, while the volatile corrosion inhibitors release a protective vapor that travels and forms a molecular layer on all exposed metal surfaces, even those above the fluid level or in hard-to-reach areas. This dual action ensures complete coverage.

• What makes Cortec VpCI-649 BD stand out as an environmentally friendly choice?

Cortec VpCI-649 BD is formulated without harmful substances like nitrites, phosphates, chromates, or heavy metals, making it significantly safer for the environment. Its biodegradable nature further simplifies disposal, particularly for large volumes of water, which is a major advantage over traditional corrosion inhibitors.

• Can Cortec VpCI-649 BD effectively prevent scale buildup in water systems?

Yes, absolutely! Beyond its primary role as a corrosion inhibitor, Cortec VpCI-649 BD incorporates an acrylic polymer. This intelligent additive actively prevents the formation of scale, which can significantly reduce system efficiency and lead to costly maintenance.

• Does Cortec VpCI-649 BD also address issues with microbial growth and associated odors in systems?

Indeed it does. Cortec VpCI-649 BD includes organic dispersing agents and an odor-control component, which effectively minimize the growth of bacteria and the unpleasant odors that can naturally arise in closed-loop systems, contributing to a healthier and more pleasant operational environment.

Key Applications & Practical Uses

• Where are the primary applications for Cortec VpCI-649 BD, and what specific types of systems benefit most?

Cortec VpCI-649 BD is particularly effective for protecting metals in fresh water, steam, and glycol-based closed-loop systems. This includes, but isn't limited to, cooling systems, fire extinguishing systems, and various industrial process equipment where water is present.

• Is Cortec VpCI-649 BD suitable for hydrostatic testing of pipelines and vessels?

Yes, it’s an excellent choice for hydrostatic testing! Adding Cortec VpCI-649 BD to the hydrostatic testing water provides crucial corrosion protection to pipelines, casings, tanks, and valves, not just during the test but also for a considerable time afterward, preventing flash rust and internal corrosion.

• Can Cortec VpCI-649 BD be used for the wet lay-up of industrial equipment, like cooling towers?

Absolutely. For wet lay-up applications, such as preparing cooling towers for seasonal shutdown, Cortec VpCI-649 BD can be added to the system's water at a specific concentration to ensure long-term corrosion-free preservation until the next operational period.

• How does Cortec VpCI-649 BD help prevent water-bottom corrosion in large oil storage tanks?

Oil storage tanks often suffer from water-bottom corrosion where condensed moisture settles. By adding a low dose of Cortec VpCI-649 BD to these tanks, it forms a protective layer on the metal surfaces exposed to this moisture, effectively preventing corrosion and potential leakage.

• What specific types of metals does Cortec VpCI-649 BD protect?

Cortec VpCI-649 BD is designed to offer comprehensive multi-metal protection, safeguarding both ferrous metals like steel and cast iron, as well as non-ferrous metals such as copper, galvanized steel, and aluminum. This versatility makes it ideal for mixed-metal systems.
