Frequently Asked Questions
• What exactly is Cortec VpCI-150 adhesive foam tape and what’s its main purpose?
Cortec VpCI-150 adhesive foam tape is a unique product designed to protect metal components within enclosed spaces from the damaging effects of corrosion. Its core function is to release a special type of vapor corrosion inhibitor (VpCI) that forms a protective, molecular layer on metal surfaces, essentially stopping rust in its tracks.
• How does VpCI-150 tape actually prevent corrosion? It sounds a bit like magic!
It’s not magic, but it is clever science! The foam tape is impregnated with Vapor phase Corrosion Inhibitors (VpCIs). These VpCIs slowly vaporize and travel through the air within an enclosed space. Once they encounter any metal surface, they adsorb onto it, creating an ultra-thin, invisible molecular layer that acts as a barrier, preventing corrosive elements like moisture and airborne contaminants from reaching the metal.
• Is this tape just for preventing rust, or does it offer other benefits too?
Beyond exceptional rust prevention, the Cortec VpCI-150 tape also provides crucial anti-static protection. This is particularly important for sensitive electronic components, as it helps dissipate static charges that could otherwise cause damage.
• What kind of metals can Cortec VpCI-150 protect? Is it a one-size-fits-all solution?
Absolutely, it's designed to be a multi-metal protector. Cortec VpCI-150 is effective in safeguarding a wide range of metals, including common ones like copper, aluminum, steel, and even stainless steel, making it incredibly versatile for various applications.
• How long can I expect the VpCI-150 tape to offer protection once it's installed?
You can count on continuous protection for up to 24 months, or two full years. This long-lasting efficacy makes it a low-maintenance solution for both equipment in operation and those in storage or transit.
Relevant products you may want to consider:
• Where would I typically use Cortec VpCI-150 tape? Give me some real-world examples!
You'd typically find Cortec VpCI-150 tape being used in places where sensitive electronics and metal components need protection from corrosion. Think of control boxes, electrical and electronic enclosures, fuse boxes, power boxes, and even marine navigation and communication equipment.
• Can I use this tape for larger industrial equipment, or is it better suited for smaller items?
While it's excellent for protecting sensitive components in smaller enclosures, its VpCI action can also extend to protect larger equipment when used strategically within its enclosed spaces. It’s about creating a protective atmosphere where corrosion can't thrive.
• Is VpCI-150 suitable for protecting equipment that’s being shipped or stored for a long time?
Yes, it's actually ideal for that! The tape provides robust protection during shipping and long-term storage, ensuring that your valuable assets arrive and remain in pristine condition, free from corrosion.
• My equipment is exposed to humid and polluted environments. Will VpCI-150 still be effective?
Absolutely. Cortec VpCI-150 is specifically formulated to be effective even in challenging polluted and humid environments, providing a reliable barrier against common corrosive agents like salt, hydrogen sulfide (H2S), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and ammonia (NH3).
• Can VpCI-150 be used in medical equipment? Are there any safety concerns regarding its use in such sensitive applications?
Yes, it can be used in medical equipment. Cortec VpCI-150 is non-toxic and safe to handle, and it's even accepted by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency for indirect contact with food and packaging equipment, which speaks to its safety profile.
Relevant products you may want to consider:
• I have a lot of electrical wireways and terminal boxes. Is this tape good for those specific areas?
Yes, Cortec VpCI-150 is perfectly suited for protecting electrical RF, electronic wireways, and terminal boxes. It helps safeguard all conductive leads, connectors, and terminals within those enclosed spaces.
• What about scientific and measuring instruments? Are they a good fit for this tape?
Definitely. Precision scientific and measuring instruments often contain delicate metal components that are highly susceptible to corrosion. VpCI-150 provides the essential protection needed to maintain their accuracy and longevity.
• Can it be used in telecommunications equipment or remote electronic devices?
Yes, it's an excellent choice for both telecommunications equipment and remote electronic devices. These often operate in diverse environments and require reliable corrosion prevention to ensure uninterrupted functionality.
• My control boxes get opened frequently for maintenance. How does this affect the tape's effectiveness?
While VpCI-150 provides continuous protection, frequent opening of the enclosure might allow some of the VpCI vapors to dissipate. In such cases, it's recommended to replace the tape more often than the standard 24-month period, especially after heavy maintenance, to ensure consistent protection.
• Is there a guideline for how much tape to use based on the size of the enclosure?
Yes, there's a general guideline: VpCI-150 protects up to 0.4 cubic feet (11.3 liters) per linear inch (2.5 cm) of tape. This helps you calculate the appropriate amount needed for your specific enclosure size.
Relevant products you may want to consider:
• How difficult is it to install Cortec VpCI-150 tape? Do I need special tools or skills?
It's incredibly simple and convenient to install! You won't need any special tools or advanced skills. It's designed for quick and easy application by just about anyone.
• Can you walk me through the steps for installing the tape?
Of course! First, choose a spot inside the enclosed device where you want corrosion protection. Then, make sure the surface where you'll stick the tape is clean and free of any dirt or debris. Next, simply peel off the protective liner from the back of the tape and firmly attach it to the clean surface. That's it!
• Does the tape need to be placed in a specific orientation or position within the enclosure?
No, that's one of its convenient features! The VpCI-150 tape can be installed in any position you find most suitable within the enclosed space.
• Do I need to clean or prepare the metal surfaces before applying the tape?
One of the great advantages of VpCI technology is that it generally doesn't require extensive surface preparation. The VpCIs will diffuse and protect the metal surfaces even if they aren't perfectly clean, though a clean surface for adhesion is always good practice.
• What if the enclosure isn't completely airtight? Will the VpCI-150 still work effectively?
It will still provide protection, but if the enclosure isn't totally airtight or if access doors are opened frequently, the VpCI vapors might dissipate a bit faster. In these situations, you might consider replacing the tape more frequently than the typical 2-year lifespan to ensure optimal protection.
Relevant products you may want to consider:
