Frequently Asked Questions
• What exactly is Cortec Boiler Dragon and what's its main purpose?
Cortec Boiler Dragon is a highly advanced, ready-to-use liquid designed to protect large boilers and steam systems from corrosion during periods of dry layup, whether it's for a short while or a longer shutdown. It uses special vapor phase corrosion inhibiting (VpCI®) technology to effectively guard metal surfaces.
• How does Boiler Dragon actually work to prevent rust inside my boiler?
The magic of Boiler Dragon lies in its unique vapor phase corrosion inhibitors. When applied, these clever molecules transform into a protective vapor that travels throughout all the boiler’s internal spaces. They then settle on all the metal surfaces, even those tricky, hard-to-reach areas, creating a continuous, molecular-level barrier against rust and corrosion.
• Is Boiler Dragon suitable for all kinds of metal within a boiler system?
Absolutely! Cortec Boiler Dragon is formulated for multi-metal protection. This means it's effective on common boiler materials like carbon steel, stainless steel, galvanized steel, cast iron, aluminum, and even copper and its alloys. It's truly a versatile solution for diverse boiler constructions.
• What sets Boiler Dragon apart from older, more traditional methods for boiler preservation?
Boiler Dragon really steps up the game compared to conventional methods like using desiccants, quicklime, or nitrogen blankets. It's often a safer and significantly more effective alternative because it provides continuous, vapor-phase protection without the hazards or complexities associated with those older techniques. Plus, it simplifies the return-to-service process immensely.
• Does Boiler Dragon leave any residue or require extensive cleaning before a boiler can be restarted?
One of the standout benefits of Boiler Dragon is its hassle-free nature. It doesn't form any solid residue, and when it's time to bring your boiler back online, there's no need for product removal or flushing. You simply fill the boiler with makeup water, and you're good to go, saving a considerable amount of time and effort.
Relevant products you may want to consider:
• I've heard about "Boiler Dragon FO." What's the difference between that and the regular Boiler Dragon?
Boiler Dragon FO is a specific version designed for ferrous metals only. So, if your boiler system primarily consists of iron or steel components and doesn't have significant amounts of other metals like copper or aluminum that require protection, then Boiler Dragon FO might be the more tailored choice. The standard Boiler Dragon offers broader multi-metal protection.
• How do I actually apply Cortec Boiler Dragon to my boiler? Is it complicated?
Applying Boiler Dragon is quite straightforward. It's designed to be used as a fogging fluid. You'll typically apply the liquid by spraying or fogging it into the interior of your boiler or steam components. For larger systems, using a low-pressure, high-volume pump or sprayer will make the application efficient.
• What's the recommended dosage for Boiler Dragon when I'm treating my boiler?
The general recommendation for Boiler Dragon is to use about 0.7 to 1.0 fluid ounce per cubic foot (or 0.7 to 1.0 liter per cubic meter) of equipment interior. To put it simply, one gallon of Boiler Dragon liquid is typically enough to treat approximately 1,000 gallons (or 1 cubic meter) of boiler volume.
• Should I keep all boiler openings sealed after applying Boiler Dragon?
Yes, absolutely! After you've applied Boiler Dragon, it's crucial to seal all boiler openings. This traps the protective vapors inside, allowing them to thoroughly diffuse and form that essential corrosion-inhibiting layer on all metal surfaces, ensuring maximum protection.
• Do I need to ensure the fog reaches every single surface inside the boiler for it to be effective?
That's the beauty of the vapor phase technology! Direct application to every single metal surface isn't necessary. The VpCI® molecules vaporize and then spread throughout the entire enclosed space, reaching even the most inaccessible and recessed areas, providing continuous protection without you needing to manually coat every part.
Relevant products you may want to consider:
• Can I use Boiler Dragon for both short-term and long-term boiler preservation?
Yes, Boiler Dragon is incredibly versatile for layup needs. It's specifically designed to provide excellent protection for both short-term preservation periods, like seasonal shutdowns, and for more extended, long-term preservation, even when a boiler might be mothballed.
• Are there any specific "tricks of the trade" for applying Boiler Dragon to very large or complex boiler systems?
When dealing with particularly large or intricate systems, a helpful tip is to ensure there's an opening at the opposite end of the boiler from where you're applying the fog. You can fog into one opening until you see the product start to emerge from the other side, then close that opening, finish your dosage, and finally seal the initial opening. Sometimes, a fan or vacuum pump at the opposite end can even help pull the vapors through for complete coverage.
• Is there any specific temperature range I should be aware of for storing Boiler Dragon to maintain its effectiveness?
To ensure optimal product performance and longevity, it's best to store Boiler Dragon in its original packaging, indoors, and out of direct sunlight. The ideal storage temperature range is between 40-100 °F (4-38 °C).
